Abstract

Abstract The i.r. spectra of each of the 24 uni-unimolecular hydrogen bonded complexes formed by phenol, 4-Me, 4-F, 4-Cl, 4-Br and 4-I phenol with pyridine, 4-Me, 4-Et and 4-Ph pyridine have been measured over the range 450-80 cm −1. An assignment of all the observed bands is made, and in all the complexes an intermolecular band distinguished, which is ascribed to stretching of the hydrogen bond ν σ. The frequency is compared with the shift of the OH stretching frequency Δν s, which has also been measured for each complex.
