Abstract

Abstract Pyrolytic gas chromatography was used to investigate ternary copolymers tetrafluoroethylene-ethylene-hexafluoropropylene of various composition between 500 and 800°C. An analysis of the volatile degradation products and a comparison with the results of IR spectroscopy have shown the thermal degradation to yield the starting monomers along with two hybrid products—vinylene fluoride and tetrafluoropropylene. Under the assumption that the macrochains are broken with equal probability and exclusively at the C-C bonds internal to the original monomer units, equations were derived that relate the copolymer composition and the fractions of different repeat unit combinations to the composition of thje volatile products of pyrolysis. The results of gas chromatography and IR spectroscopy were found to be in good agreement.
