Abstract

Abstract A review is presented of experimental results pertaining to the dynamics of vortices in thin-film two-dimensional superconductors. Our interpretation of the vortex-antivortex unbinding transition and the properties of the vortex medium in both the solid and fluid phases is based on a two-dimensional Coulomb gas analogue. Resistive transitions, complex impedance measurements and a variety of other techniques are, in most cases, consistent with the central results of the relevant theories. We conclude with a brief discussion of the substantial number of unsolved problems which remain a challenge to theorists and experimentalists alike.
