Abstract

Abstract A well-defined band has been observed in the low temperature infrared spectrum of KI, KBr, NaI, and RbCl in the region corresponding to the sum of three optical branch phonos and no corresponding band in the two- and four-phonon regions. These results can be accounted for by deducing an odd-even quasiselection rule for crystals having a gap between the optical and acoustical branches of the vibrational spectrum.
