Abstract

Soviet geographers: Marxism and after. Far from being the emergence of a new Soviet geography, the renewal which became manifest under «perestroika» rather corresponds to the appearance of a geography hitherto unknown in the West, which had been rather unobtrusive in the USSR and only survived precisely because it remained to some extent marginal. Although these «new geographers», usually fairly advanced in age, have had few direct contacts with the West, their writings show a genuine awareness of the major currents of reflexion of Western geography, notably research on the spatial models which were rejected by «orthodox» soviet geography. Their reflexion constitutes an original contribution to analyses of the present crisis by bringing into light its purely geographical dimension.
