On the determination of the hyperfine fields in various R2Fe14B compounds

Abstract

Abstract A detailed analysis of approximately fifty iron-57 Mössbauer spectra of R 2Fe 14B and R 2Fe 14C, obtained as a function of rare-earth and temperature, reveals that the iron 8j 2 site has the largest hyperfine field of the six crystallographically distinct iron sites present in these compounds. This experimental result does not agree with a recent calculation of the hyperfine fields in R 2Fe 14B which indicates that the 16k 2 site has the largest hyperfine field. The inconsistency of this calculation with the experimentally measured hyperfine fields leads to the conclusion that the calculated hyperfine fields must be accepted with caution.
