Abstract

Abstract The anatomical varieties of atrial septal defect are described and their clinical diagnosis is discussed on the basis of experience in investigating a series of 300 subjects and of observations made at operation on 180 of them. In particular, the diagnosis of atrioventricular (ostium primum) defects is discussed. It can be made almost always on the basis of typical clinical signs and electrocardiogram, sometimes aided by cardiac catheterization.
