Abstract

Abstract We investigate the symmetry of viewing characteristics of liquid crystal displays (LCDs) which employ either twisted nematic (TN) or super twisted nematic (STN) liquid crystals. By using the rotation symmetry of the display structures and the principle of reciprocity, we present a mathematical proof of the exact left–right viewing symmetry of normally white TN-LCDs and STN-LCDs as well as various modes of LCDs. We also describe the effect of inserting phase retardation compensators on the viewing symmetry of the displays and present the split compensator configurations for preserving the symmetry. The results are presented and discussed.
