Stationary Liquid-Phase Homogeneous Transition Metal Catalysis

Abstract Immobilization of homogeneous liquid-phase catalysts on solid carriers could result in novel catalysts, which combine the advantages of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, e.g. high activity, high selectivity, and easy product separation. In order to maintain the catalytic performance of a supported liquid-phase (SLP) homogeneous catalyst, the liquid-phase must remain on the support throughout the reaction. When leaching of the liquid-phase does not occur the SLP catalysts should be called stationary liquid-phase homogeneous catalyst. We have developed a stationary strong acid phase platinum catalyst which can be used for the hydrogenation of aromatics at 25–75°C and 100–800 psi of H2. The catalyst is prepared by supporting a solution of PtCl2 (MeCN)2 in BF3.H2O on silica or clay, and has been tested in batch and continuous reactors.
