Abstract

In addition to being a key service provider, the role of the sector in promoting social cohesion, raising civic awareness and facilitating participation in community activities — all of which have indirect economic and social benefits — is increasingly acknowledged by policymakers. Against this backdrop, the Australian government has foreshadowed the need for changes in governance arrangements underlying its relationship with the sector, including through a National Compact or agreement setting out the basis on which future collaboration will occur. This issues paper was released to assist participants in preparing submissions to the commissioned study into the Contribution of the Not for Profit Sector. It outlines a range of issues about which the Commission is seeking information.
