Abstract

Abstract Tetrahydrofurane has been used as an alternative solvent for the solution growth of large transparent α-HgI 2 crystals by an evaporation technique. The advantages of this solvent compared with dimethylsulfoxide are a low viscosity, a high vapour pressure and a larger concentration-density dependence of the saturated solution. An extremely broad metastable region allows simple control and regulation of the supersaturation during crystal growth.
