Abstract

Abstract The effects of chloroform and halothane on the Donnan potential and the membrane potential of protoplasmic drops isolated from Chara corallina were investigated as a function of inhalation anesthetic concentration. Chloroform and halothane produced a sudden change of about 18 mV in the Donnan potential and the membrane potential of protoplasmic drops at concentrations of 0.1 and 0.05 m M, respectively. This was interpreted as showing that the two inhalation anesthetics cause a phase change in the cell membrane at different concentrations, accompanied by an abrupt decrease in the surface charge density.
