Abstract

Abstract The viscosity of gaseous 3He has been calculated using the general quantummechanical expressions for the coefficient of viscosity. The calculation is based on the intermolecular potentialfield, used previously for the calculation of the equation of state of 3He in the gasstate 6) and for the equation of state 7) and transport properties 4) of gaseous 4He. The theoretical results, which are limited to temperatures below 5°K, show that the viscosity of 3He is about two times larger than when calculated from the viscosity of 4He, taking into account only the difference in mass. There is also a marked influence of the nuclear spin and the statistics at these low temperatures.
