Abstract

Abstract A previously unidentified virus with properties of a helper leukemia virus has been isolated from stocks of the rat-tropic sarcoma virus, M-MSV-O. This non-focus-forming virus is shown to be responsible for the unusual host range and antigenic properties of M-MSV-O. Furthermore, the sarcoma virus of M-MSV-O, although capable of transforming rat cells in the absence of leukemia virus, is demonstrated to require leukemia virus for its replication. It is suggested that the newly isolated helper virus may be an indigenous virus of the rat.
