Abstract

Abstract T 1, T 1 ϱ and the second moment of the 19F nuclei in (C 6H 5) 4PSiF 5 have been measured as a function of temperature. Efforts to explain the relaxation results in terms of reorientations about the symmetry axes of either the square pyramidal or the trigonal bipyramidal molecular structures have been unsuccessful. A model in which the trigonal bipyramidal structure executes an internal pseudoreorientation as well as reorientations about the twofold and the threefold axes yields satisfactory agreement with the experimentally obtained relaxation results. Proton T 1 measurements reveal twofold reorientations of C 6H 5 rings at higher temperatures.
