Abstract

Abstract Two sets of carboxylate i.r. bands found in the spectra of trihydrated bis(benzoate) complexes of copper(II) and nickel(II) are attributed to the presence of two benzoate anion types: one coordinated to metal, the other noncoordinated. Regularity in the average of antisymmetric and symmetric carboxylate frequencies for other prepared [ M(BzO) 2 and M(OH)BzO, M = Cu(II) and Zn(II)] and reported benzoate complexes is used as the basis for identifying and assigning metal-coordinated carboxylate frequencies in the trihydrated complexes.
