Abstract 1. 1. Electron microscopical pictures of sections of chloroplasts of Beta sacharifera and Aspidistra elatior are presented. 2. 2. Available facts are interpreted to show no membrane of the chloroplast nor of the “grana” within the chloroplast. 3. 3. The “grana” are shown to be stacks of lamellae, the long axes of the stacks arranged about normal to the long axis of the chloroplast. 4. 4. The occurrence of accumulated assimilates within and outside the chloroplast is shown.
