XPS investigation of lithium borate glass and the Li/LiBO2interface

Abstract

Abstract X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to examine the surfaces of vacuum-fractured lithium borate glasses with compositions of xLi 2O−(1− x)B 2O 3 for x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 and the vapor-deposited thin-film LiBO 2. Binding energies for the Li 1s, B 1s and O 1s peaks have been determined, referenced to the Au4f 7/2 peak of a thin gold overlayer. The Li/LiBO 2 interface was investigated by a sequence of depositions of lithium onto a LiBO 2 surface followed by in situ XPS scans. Observed changes in XPS spectra of the interface region provide evidence of compositional and structural changes within the lithium borate film as a result of the lithium deposition.
