Abstract

Abstract Attempting to predict the future is filled with hazard but an effort to do so is made through consideration of issues of the past such as the disciplines of psychology (clinical, correlational, experimental), construct validity, the value of a dynamic-systems perspective, and the importance of linkages with other fields. The field of personality is viewed as consisting of the study of the patterned, organized, system aspects of human functioning. Within this context the value of alternative research strategies (e.g., idiographic and nomothetic) and the importance of contributions from other parts of psychology as well as other disciplines (e.g., learning theory, behavioral neuroscience, cross-cultural psychology, biology, anthropology) are emphasized.
