Abstract

Abstract The Herrman-Mirsky equations for axially symmetric motions of a thick walled cylinder are used to calculate the dynamic response of a gun tube to a ballistic pressure moving at a velocity very close to the lowest critical velocity. A comparison with strains measured during actual firings shows good agreement. The method of solution previously used by others for single-degree-of-freedom models is shown to be an efficient alternative to the method of Fourier transformation.
