Abstract

Stein_CV_Nov_2011 November 2011 Prof. Dr. Ruediger Stein Date of Birth: February 09, 1954 Place of Birth: Wilhelmshaven, Germany Nationality: German Degrees 1980 Degree in Geology, Kiel University, Germany 1984 PhD, Kiel University, Germany 1990 Habilitation Gießen University, Germany Positions 2003 - present Professor (Arctic Ocean Paleoceanography), Bremen University, Germany 1991 - 2002 Privatdozent, Bremen University, Germany 1991 - present (Senior) Research Scientist, Alfred Wegener Institute Bremerhaven, Germany 1986 - 1990 Assistent Professor at Gießen University, Germany 1984 - 1986 Research Scientist Institute for Petroleum and Organic Geochmistry, KFA Jülich, Germany Research Work Overall goal of my research is the reconstruction of paleoclimate and paleoceanography of the High Northern Latitudes on different time scales, i.e., the long-term evolution from Greenhouse to Icehouse conditions during late Cretaceous/Early Cenozoic times and the short-term centennial-millenial variability. Of special interest are the history of circum-Arctic ice sheets and the Arctic Ocean organic carbon cycle (marine vs. terrigenous organic carbon flux; reconstruction of surface-water productivity, sea-ice cover, oxygenation of water masses). Large part of the research is embedded in the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP). Working areas include the Arctic Ocean and adjacent marginal seas, the North Atlantic, and the North Pacific/Bering Sea. Methods to be used are sedimentological and mineralogical investigations (X-Ray diffraction, MSCL logging, XRF scanning, microscopy, grain size) of terrigenous sediment fraction; determination of organic geochemical bulk parameters and biomarkers by means of elemental analysis, Rock-Eval pyrolysis, and GC and GC/MS techniques.
