Abstract

/ CARNEGIE INSTITUTION OF WASHINGTON DEPARTMENT OF GENETICS COLD SPRlNO HARBOR. LONO ISLAND. f-4. Y. Karch 22, 1951 Dr. Joshua Lederberg Department of Genetics University of Wisconsin Kadison, Wisconsin Dear Dr. Lederberg: For my doctorate dissertation at Cornell University I studied the effects of ultraviolet ra<Aiations on the hoterozygous H-72 strain of' ti. coli. course of this work I discovered thz apparent During the "haploidizing" effect of ultraviolet and made a study of this effect and its reversal by photoreactivation. Dr. Zelle informs me that you have obtained similar results from your studies ol' the heterozygote. At the presen t time I am preparing a short manuscript concerning my observations on this phenomenon. I would like to know if you would have time to examine the manuscript before I submit it for pubiication since I am interested in any comment you might have based upon your own extensive experience with this culture. 1 am no longer working on this problem since it appears that a study of the mechanism involved is a much more extensive problem than I am prepared to undertake at this moment. Sincerely yours, Edward J. Deckhorn
