Changes in mitotic activity in the basal proliferative tissues after experimental shortening of the rat incisor

Abstract

Abstract Mitotic counts in defined areas increased significantly at 6 h after shortening of the incisor in the labial pulp and the lingual periodontium, and at 12 h in all tissues examined including the internal enamel epithelium and the lingual pulp. Mean values were also greater 18 and 24 h after shortening of the incisor in all tissues. It is deduced that elimination of occlusal contacts caused immediate stimulation of the cell division cycle as well as acceleration of incisor eruption. Circadian rhythm of the mitotic activity in the basal proliferative tissues was not marked.
