Abstract With the introduction of draft and full genome sequences, new challenges will face prokaryotic systematics. Although until now the definition of taxonomic ranks mainly were based on phenotypic data, DNA–DNA hybridization, and the sequence of the 16S rRNA gene, a much wider array of gene sequences not only will add new phylogenetic information but also some of the traditional methods for delineating ranks will be replaced by more objective approaches.
