Yougou Monastery: Iron Pagoda

Abstract

Henan Province. The name, Iron Pagoda, comes from the reddish brown hue of its brick facing, which looks like iron from a distance. 13 stories tall, octagonal. Erected in 1049, the first year of the Huangyou era, during the reign of Emperor Renzong (r. 1023-1063). It is said that the building has survived 70 earthquakes.
