Pion scattering to the isoscalar giant quadrupole resonance in208Pb

Abstract

Abstract Neutron and proton transition densities computed by an RPA method are used to predict the differential cross sections for π − and π + inelastic scattering to the nominally isoscalar 10.5 MeV giant 2 + state in 208Pb, where a greater π − than π + cross section is measured, indicating a neutron-like dominance. These predictions match the π − data at a beam energy of 162 MeV, but exceed the π + data by a factor of about 1.3. The beam energy dependence of the ratio of π − and π + cross sections is computed and compared to predictions using a hydrodynamic model. Inelastic α-particle scattering is also shown to be determined by the neutron component of the RPA transition density, not the isoscalar.
