Abstract

As the general fund of knowledge about the earliest years of the motion picture industry increases, one of the most interesting debates to arise in recent years is over the question of when the use of scenarios and screenplays was introduced into film production process in America. In the past it generally has been assumed that the regular use of scripts/screen plays was introduced in the middle of 1910, well after the period when narrative films had become the dominant film product. Evidence has recently come to light which suggests that certain studios began working from screenplays by 1904.
