Abstract

The Var coastline offers researchers the examples of two antique ports : Olbia and Toulon. Both were founded by the Phocean Greeks of Marseilles, the former during the 4th century B.C., the latter during the Ist century B.C. Recent researches conducted by archaeologists and geographers on these two sites have allowed us to compare their development and to deduct the possible historical and environmental factors that might have permitted the port of Toulon to develop successfully while the port of Olbia eventually disappeared.
