Abstract

Provides support for the hypothesis that inbreeding combined with selection may purge deleterious alleles through a study of Chillingham cattle in England. Homozygosity of the herd; Identification of a single heterozygous marker which is believed to represent the persistence of ancestral heterozygosity; Conclusion that the continuing viability of the herd shows that deleterious alleles have been purged
