Abstract We discuss some consequences of the production of a top quark of mass comparable to M w . Such a top quark decays into an on-shell W plus a b-quark. For m top ~ M w , the QCD t t production cross section, already sizeable at Sp p S energies, increases rapidly with √s. This, combined with the peculiar kinematics of the top decay for m top ~ M w , results in the production of apparent WW pairs at a rate overwhelming the electroweak WW cross section. This WW production mechanism would also represent an important contribution to the inclusive high- P tW production tail, even for masses of top (or higher generation t', b' quarks) substantially larger than M w .
