Abstract

Abstract An energy function is defined for C 2 knots. It is shown that the function has several attractive qualities: it is scale invariant; it “blows up” if the knot is self-intersecting (so that on the energy hypersurface knot types are separated by infinitely high potential walls); it has a relatively simple definition and a pseudo-physical interpretation.
