Abstract

Abstract A Verwey-type transition has been shown in ferrites of composition Mg x Fe 3- x O 4 (0⩽ x⩽0.4) by carrying out measurements of various quantities as a function of temperature: resistivity, magnetization, Mössbauer spectra and initial permeability. The transition temperature T v decreases with the Mg content. It is also shown that permeability measurement is an accurate means to determine T v.
