Abstract

From the analysis of the income of the parish priests living in the current French "département de la Sarthe", Father Ch. Girault, in 1790, came to the conclusion that the Haut-Maine clergy was relatively well-off in the years before the French Revolution. The examination of over 50 inventories drawn-up after the death of parish priests confirms this former observation. It also reveals that in spite of an evolution in the social origin of the priests, they ail adopted the "material culture" of the "Bourgeoisie" and behaved like notables enjoying the pleasures of life.
