Abstract

Abstract The photolysis of 2-methylthietane and 2,4-dimethylthietane in argon matrices was investigated using infrared spectroscopy. 2-Methylthietane decomposed on irradiation to form ethylene, propylene, thioformaldehyde and thioacetaldehyde. 2,4-Dimethylthietane decomposed on irradiation to form propylene and thioacetaldehyde. After exclusion of thioformaldehyde, ethylene, and propylene absorptions from the spectra of the photoproducts, the remained bands were assigned to thioacetaldehyde.
