Abstract

Summary Several forms of hypoglycemia due to direct inhibition of hepatic glucose production in man have been reviewed. The mechanism of action of ethanol in lowering blood glucose remains to be defined. Excess accumulation of a phosphorylated intermediate in both normal man and patients with hereditary enzyme deficiences appears to induce hypoglycemia following administration of certain sugars.
