Abstract

Abstract Local structural evidence is found supporting the presence of charge inhomogeneities in the CuO 2 planes of underdoped La 2−xSr xCuO 4, using high-resolution PDF analysis of neutron powder diffraction data. Broadening of the in-plane Cu O bond distribution as a function of doping up to optimal doping is observed. Thereafter the peak abruptly sharpens. The result suggests a crossover from a charge inhomogeneous state below optimal doping to a homogeneous charge state above optimal doping.
