Abstract

The authors present the results of a psychopathological investigation of patients with long depressive episodes (duration 6 months to 2 years) within bipolar affective disorder and recurrent depressive disorder, specifically, the data about the rate and psychopathological structure of protracted depression in out-patient psychiatric practice. Representative clinical material was compared with the control group (duration of depressive episode from 3 weeks to 4 months) with special regard for the prevalent affect. The authors describe the factors that seem to influence the formation of protracted depression as well as their psychopathological structure and typological variants, which appear to be associated with the structure of the affect that influences its dynamics. The authors describe the principles of differentiated therapy and prognosis for a protracted depressive episode (with regard for psychopathological structure)
