Abstract GdPd 2Al 3 has been studied by 155Gd Mössbauer spectroscopy. This compound was shown to order at 16 K. A pure axial single site quadrupolar spectrum with a rather large and positive V zz was observed in the paramagnetic state. At low temperatures the hyperfine spectrum consists in a superposition of at least two magnetic patterns with different angles between the magnetization and V zz axes. The quadrupolar interaction data were used to evaluate the second order B 0 2 crystal field term in the rare earth RPd 2Al 3 series. The ground state for the Ce 3+ and Np 3+ ions in the CePd 2Al 3 and NpPd 2Al 3 compounds was inferred from the experimental results.
