Structure of thin Ag and Au films on Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+xdetermined with x-ray photoelectron diffraction

Abstract

Abstract In order to obtain microscopic information on the Ag/Bi 2Sr 2CaCu 2O 8+x and Au/Bi 2Sr 2CaCu 2O 8+x interfaces we have investigated the structure of Ag and Au films on Bi 2Sr 2CaCu 2O 8+x(001) single crystals with x-ray photoelectron diffraction. Although Ag and Au are very similar from a crystallographic and electronic point of view, we find considerable differences. Our results show that Ag forms islands on the Bi 2Sr 2CaCu 2O 8+x surface and that about 50% of the Ag is ordered in two (110) domains which are rotated by 109°. Au, however, wets the surface much better and about 20% of the deposited Au forms two (111) domains rotated by 180°.
