Abstract

Abstract Conditions for intermetallic compound formation at room temperature have been studied in a number of Au Me couples, of both film/film and bulk/film types. It has been concluded that compounds are formed in the Au Me thin film couples (Me ≡ Ga, In, Sn, Cd, Pb, Zn, Sb, Al) if the melting temperatures of the metal and of the compounds formed are lower or equal to two thirds of the melting temperature of gold. In the case of the metals Cu, Mn, Sm or compounds Au-Mg having higher melting temperatures no compound formation occurs. A similar condition is valid for the Au Me couples of the bulk/film type.
