Abstract

Abstract A previous report in the literature by A. Khan [Surface Sci. 48 (1975) 537] found that the (10 1 ]0) surface of titanium showed a number of ( N × N) superstructure RHEED patterns, depending on the temperature, that were attributed to surface reconstructions. We have examined such a surface with LEED and AES and find no evidence for large-scale reconstructions on the clean surface. The structures reported by Khan may have originated with small amounts of undetected impurities segregating and dissolving at the surface.
