Surface remelting and alloying of Al-based alloys with CO2 laser radiation

Abstract

Surface remelting and alloying with CO2 laser radiation of aluminium (Al99.99) and Al-based alloys (AlSi10Mg) are investigated as a function of processing variables. Cr and Ni have been used as alloying elements within 1-step powder feeding technique. The processed layers are investigated by optical microscopy, are pore and crack free either in the case of single or overlapping tracks. The microhardness and the mechanical-technical properties of the Al-based alloys are significantly improved by the formation of intermetallic compounds.
