Abstract

Abstract Extrinsic scattering due to various defects very strongly influences optical losses in chalcogenide glasses and fibres. The relationships between scattering and the presence of homopolar SS and AsAs bonds, the concentration of H 2S, the quantity of bubbles and other defects are discussed. Scattering is measured at the wavelength of a HeNe laser; concentration of AsAs bonds is determined by a chemical method.
