Abstract

Abstract The effects of a wavy wall upon the blood oxygenation in a tubular membrane oxygenator are studied by assuming that whole blood behaves like a homogeneous Newtonian fluid and that the wavelength of the membrane surface is much longer than the mean radius of the tube. It is found that the wall irregularity has a strong effect on local oxygenation concentration distribution but has little effect on the saturation length. Therefore, the secondary flows induced by the cell-plasma and cell-cell interaction or possible motion of the wall induced by the pump is more likely the primary mechanism for a vast increase in the efficiency of oxygenators using plane wavy channels reported by Kolobow, etc.
