Abstract

Abstract An analysis is presented of the equilibrium potentials of samples of WO 3 which were reduced and coloured electrochemically to form hydrogen tungsten bronzes (H x WO 3) of varying composition. The analysis shows that the bronzes are in a fully ionised state, that bronze formation will not be thermodynamically favoured when the hydrogen content is high ( x→1), and that the oxidation of bronzes by oxygen is strongly favoured thermodynamically except when x is very small. The dependence of the equilibrium potentials on acid strength is also examined.
