Abstract

Abstract The critical cooling rate, R c, for glass formation of a 40 Li 2O60 SiO 2 glass, mol%, doped with small amounts of Pt, Au, P 2O 5, and TiO 2 nucleating agents has been measured. R c increases with increasing Pt and Au additions, but Pt has a larger effect than Au. Additions of P 2O 5 tend to decrease R c, whereas TiO 2 has practically no effect on R c. The devitrified glasses, including the undoped contains only crystalline Li 2O·SiO 2, but all the other devitrified glasses, including the undoped glass, contain both Li 2O·SiO 2 and Li 2O·2SiO 2. Analysis shows that R c increases as the concentration of the Li 2O·SiO 2 phase in the devitrified glass increases.
