Abstract

Abstract We have developed a familial searching approach which uses a combination of filtering by number of shared alleles and ordering by likelihood ratio. On repeatedly searching a simulated DNA database which had been seeded with a related profile, the relative was found in the top 20 hits in approximately 50% of cases. A method for predicting the outcome of a familial search is also described; this may help to inform a decision on whether or not a familial search has an acceptable probability of success.
