Abstract

Abstract Measurements of the Hall coefficient for the α-phase of uranium have beenmade over the temperature range 4.2 to 80K as a function of pressure up to 8kbar. The application of pressure is observed to rapidly suppress the strong temperature dependence of R H which occurs at zero pressure below about 43K. This behaviour is discussed in terms of the nature of the ‘43K transition’ which has been observed in a wide range of the physical properties of uranium and which has been recently linked with the onset of a periodic lattice distortion of the sort associated with a charge density wave.
