Abstract

Abstract First principle calculations of the electronic mechanism for the energy exchange between H and H 2 and a jellium substrate are reported. The vibrational damping rate of H 2 is found to be enhanced, when the molecule induces a resonant electronic state near the Fermi level of the substrate. The results for the vibrational broadening of H compares favourably with experimental observations, and the energy of a slowly incoming atom is, according to a friction description, found to be effectively accommodated by this electronic mechanism.
