"In the context of lifelong learning, both education guidance and distance learning are aspects of increasing importance. To gain insights into the factors on which learners base their choices before taking up a continuing or higher education course by distance learning, the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training is carrying out the research project 'Personalised (Continuing) Education Guidance in Distance Learning'. The research is designed to focus on the viewpoint of prospective learners. To ascertain their views, an online survey was conducted in 2009 among prospective and current participants in continuing and higher education courses by distance learning. The present publication outlines the progress of the project so far and presents the first interim findings, based on descriptive analyses, from the online survey." (author's abstract)
